At present India consists of 29 states and 7 union territories. India is an international mega-biodiversity country consisting of about 8% of the total biodiversity of the world, although its land area is about 2.4 % of the world’s land area. India is rich in biodiversity and has diverse ecosystems including Ramsar Sites and landscapes. Birds are also important for wildlife tourism in India. International tourists visit India to observe wildlife including birds in their natural habitats. Bird watching is an important hobby. The tourism supports the Indian economy. Birds are agents of pollination, seed dispersal, and pest control and as consumers maintain ecosystem stability. The purpose of this book is to educate our students, especially school and college students and general public at large to know about the National and State birds of India and their conservation status. The book contains 29 chapters and describes the ecology and cultural association of 27 birds.
